Vaishno Devi Yatra Guide for First-Timers

How the yatra works from Katra: registration, the trek, helicopter option, what to carry and how many days to plan.

By Super Admin

The Vaishno Devi temple sits on a hill above the town of Katra in Jammu and Kashmir. Here is how first-time pilgrims can plan the yatra.

Getting to Katra

Most travellers reach Jammu by air or train and drive to Katra. Tours from Amritsar are also popular and take around 5 hours 25 minutes by road to Katra.

Registration

Yatra registration is required before the trek, so keep valid photo ID ready for everyone in your group.

Trek, pony or helicopter

  • Trek: Walk up from Katra. Start early and carry water.
  • Pony or palanquin: Available at your own cost, helpful for children and elders.
  • Helicopter: An option that saves time and effort. Book ahead as slots depend on weather.

What to carry

Comfortable shoes, a light rain layer, a small bag and any medicines. Leave bulky items at the hotel.

How many days?

Two nights in Katra is comfortable: arrival and local sightseeing on day one, darshan on day two. Many travellers add Patnitop and Sanasar, or continue to Kashmir.

Our tours

We offer Vaishno Devi tours with hotel stay, breakfast, dinner and cab transfers, including a helicopter option.
