Leh Ladakh Trip Tips: Acclimatisation and Packing
Altitude, passes, best season and a packing list so your Ladakh trip stays comfortable.
Ladakh is a high-altitude desert, so a little preparation makes the trip far more enjoyable. These Leh Ladakh trip tips cover altitude, season and packing.
Acclimatise first
Leh is at a high altitude, and many travellers feel breathless or tired at first. Keep your first day light, drink water, avoid alcohol and do not rush into long drives. Good itineraries put sightseeing in Leh before Nubra Valley and Pangong Lake.
Know the passes
- Khardung La: on the road from Leh to Nubra Valley.
- Chang La: on the road to Pangong Lake.
Stay a short time at the top of passes and keep children and elders well hydrated.
Best season
Roads and passes are generally open from late spring to early autumn, which is the most popular time. Always check current road and permit rules before travel.
Packing list
- Warm layers, even in summer
- Sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat
- Moisturiser and lip balm
- Basic medicines and your prescriptions
- Power bank and a camera
